Case Study Public Prep
Type Charter School
Location 192 E 151st St
In early 2016, Ian Rowe - CEO of Public Prep Charter School - came to Vicus with a vision for Boys Prep, a single-sex charter school serving 800 children in grades K-8 in the South Bronx.
Making that vision a reality? That's where Vicus came in. Ideally, Rowe & Boys Prep's future home would be:
fit for 800+ children and a growing student body within a defined budget
zoned as-of-right for a school in the heart of the South Bronx, close to public transportation and green space
able to provide substantial owner investment to build the space
up and running within 2 years, including construction time
After many months of searching for the perfect building, the Vicus team zeroed in on a vacant 55,000 SF building located just off the Grand Concourse at 192 E 151st St. steps away from transportation and a park; the next crucial step was convincing ownership that Public Prep was worth the investment, as the building required a transformation & substantial construction, including expansion to 85,000 SF to accommodate the long term vision for Boys Prep. Getting all parties in the same room was key; Ian Rowe outlined his mission to better the lives of children in this high need area and how the space would enhance that mission. All parties left the room ready to move forward...
Next up? Changing the law! Rowe went to Albany with the story of his struggle, and persuaded New York State government to allocate 20% of per-pupil funding to facilities funding, an unprecedented move that significantly improved financing for new charter schools across the state.
One law change and a multi-million dollar transformation later, Boys Prep Bronx Elementary and Middle School relocated to a brand new building in September 2018. Currently serving students in grades K-5, the school will add an additional grade per year until Boys Prep reaches its target capacity of 800 students serving grades K-8.
